Local officials, government employees, members of civic organizations, students and residents gathered today at the Manuel L. Quezon Park to join the nationwide commemoration of the 126th anniversary of the martyrdom of our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal with the theme: “Rizal: Alaalang Iningatan, Yaman Ngayon ng Bayan.”
The event started with the sounding of siren and tolling of church bells followed by the raising of the Philippine flag as the national anthem was played spearheaded by the 302nd Brigade and 11 Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army with the Philippine National Police and Bureau of Fire Protection.
Acting Mayor Ma. Isabel L. Sagarbarria led local officials and other dignitaries in laying wreaths at the statue of Dr. Jose Rizal as part of the commemoration rites this morning.
Inter-Faith Prayers were offered by Reverend Father John Nguyen Thanh Vinh of the Diocese of Dumaguete, Reverend Jonathan R. Pia of the Silliman University Church and Imam Abdul Maula Muhsin of the Dumaguete Muslim Community.
Acting Vice-mayor Karissa Tolentino-Maxino introduced the event’s guest of honor, the 6th time winner of the distinguished Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature Ian Fermin R. Casocot, Deputy Director of the City Heritage Council, who delivered the commemorative message paying tribute to the life and heroism Dr. Jose Rizal and whose writings continue to inspire the nation particularly the youth.
Among those present during the morning rites are Councilors Maria Marife Cordova, and Rey Lyndon Lawas, Liga ng mga Barangay President Dionie Amores, SK Federation President Renz Macion, Assistant City Administrator Dr. Dinno T. Depositario, department heads, school teachers, the Freemasons, Knights of Rizal, members of Mt. Kaladias Lodge No. 91, Girl Scouts of the Philippines, representatives of religious denominations, universities and other institutions.
