Dumaguete City has been awarded as “Best in Resource Recovery in a Centralized Materials Recovery Facility” among all the cities and municipalities in Region 7 or Central Visayas by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau VII.
Councilor Rey Lyndon Lawas (representing Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo) and Engr. Leticia Duran accepted the award duly signed by DENR Region 7 Director Maribel B. Munsayac and DENR-EMB 7 Regional Executive Director Pacquito D. Melicor Jr. during the Awarding for Best Practices on Solid Waste Management Implementation in a ceremony held recently at Radisson Blu Hotel, Cebu City.
In conferring the award to Dumaguete City, DENR-EMB stressed that the Local Government Unit was able to convincingly demonstrating the motto “May Pera sa Basura” for generating monthly income for the LGU of at least P 500, 000 through its recovery of recyclable materials/wastes while providing livelihood for the waste pickers through proper and sustainable solid waste management.
Furthermore, DENR-EMB 7 also noted that Dumaguete City was able to truly utilize the financial assistance from DENR by establishing a plastic chair facility and purchase of bio-composter and other equipment to improve the City MRF.
The City MRF is part of the 8-hectare Eco-Park Solid Waste Processing Facility, which is also a recipient of the Plastic to Chair Recycling Equipment, glass pulverizer, bio-shredder, bio-composters from DENR through the efforts of Mayor Remollo that are capable of treating and converting garbage into useful by-products.
