Seven (7) members of the Dumaguete City Arnis squad won medals in the recently concluded 9-day 16th World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation World Championships held in Mandaue City on July 16-24, 2022.
Mayor Felipe Antonio B. Remollo, represented by Councilor Karissa Tolentino-Maxino and Sangguniang Kabataan President Renz Macion, congratulated the local arnisadores for bringing honor and pride to Dumaguete City by winning 5 gold, 2 silver and 7 bronze medals in a competition that brought veteran players of Arnis, known as the national martial art and sport of the Philippines.
According to City Sports and Youth Development Coordinator Ike Xavier Villaflores, the medalists include Chris John Paul Dalagan with 2 gold and 1 silver medals; Shilloh Kimberly Flores, 2 gold and 1 bronze medals; John Wenzel Ganza with 1 gold and 1 silver; Kira Jean Ostan with 3 bronze medals; Spencer Flores, 1 bronze medal; Gwen Lherie Lopez, 1 bronze medal and Lorie Ann Esmaela, 1 bronze.
The other members of the Dumaguete City Arnis team are Loren Vida Legaspi, Bruce Charles Nuay, James Royo and George Patrick Lumjod with coaches Jufred J. Sillero and Roy Xavier Villaflores.
Arnis, which is also known as Kali, emphasized on weapon-based fighting and open hand techniques without weapons.
Mayor Remollo reiterates his support to the grassroots sports development program to cultivate and produce athletes, such as arnisadors, who could excel in national and international competitions.
Councilor Tolentino and SK President Macion will also pass a resolution of commendation at the Sangguniang Panlungsod to recognize the efforts and success of the local arnisadores worthy of emulation and to inspire other young men and women to engage in sports for physical fitness and city’s prestige.
