Enforcers of the smoke-free ordinance took their oath of office administered by Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo, Chairperson of the Smoke-Free Council, in a ceremony that was also attended by Vice-Mayor Maria Isabel Sagarbarria and Councilor Karissa Tolentino-Maxino, Wednesday.
Among the enforcers are personnel of the Dumaguete City Police Station, Traffic Management Office and other agencies deputized to apprehend violators of the ordinance to ensure a sustained enforcement of the tobacco control program.
Dumaguete City earned the distinction as a Red Orchid Hall of Fame Awardee from the Department of Health for its relentless campaign in prohibiting and penalizing cigarette smoking in public places for 3 consecutive years. Hundreds of violators have already been penalized for violating the smoke-free ordinance.
Mayor Remollo also commended establishments for their support and observance of the smoke-free ordinance through the strict implementation of “No Smoking” policy.
Enforcers are empowered to apprehend violators without exemption regardless if they are residents or transients in the city. Under the ordinance violators will be fined P 500. 00 or to render community service.
