Dumaguete City’s North City Elementary School has been awarded as the Most Learning Focused Public Elementary School Kinder to Grade 3 (Large Category) in the entire Philippines in the search for the 2020-2021 Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Curriculum and Instruction (SAFE-CI) by the Department of Education.
The award conferred by Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones last March 9, 2022 intends to recognize and reward the exemplary contributions of the country’s public schools, Schools Division Offices and Regional Offices in making authentic learning happen in the lives of public school learners amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo and City Schools Division Superintendent Gregorio Cyrus Elejorde commended the faculty, staff, pupils and parents of North City Elementary School for bringing again honor and pride to Dumaguete City by besting hundreds of other public schools in Negros Oriental, Central Visayas Region and the entire Philippines.
North City Elementary School and its Principal Eudes L. Beltran were recognized for their exemplary contributions in fostering learning towards the attainment of the holistic development of the learners by implementing programs, projects, initiatives and strategies to foster learning within the past 3 years (June 2018-2021).
Among the programs implemented by North City Elementary School are Chada Teleskwela, Academic Panda, Contextualization of learning materials and activities, preventive measures to improve health of school children, Wash-in-Schools, Gulayan sa Paaralan and Edible Landscaping Project, School Materials Resources Recycling Facility Project, Monthly activities and celebrations mandated by law that helped improve the retention and performance of pupils, Kindergarten to Grade 3, particularly in reading, mathematical and science literacy.
As confirmed by empirical data, North City Elementary School attained 0% dropout and failure rates, 0% non-readers; promotion, cohort survival and percentage of independent readers have been increasingly progressively; a high percentage of the primary learners are in the Very Satisfactory and Outstanding level of progress and achievement; improved attendance and participation; enhanced hygiene and sanitation practices; prevented water and sanitation related diseases; waste-free and toxic-free learning environment.
The school also implemented different innovations to enhance the learner’s achievements, among them are Oplan Tambayayong, MNT-Magbasa Na Ta, SEML- School Enhanced Mathematics Learning (Maestra-Maestra Ako), Tala Na Brigada, Project BISS (Balik Intawon sa School), Project BATA (Basa Tayo), Project MADS, MODULE MO, IHATOD KO/KUHA-ON KO, MAMA MAESTRA, ELB (Enhanced Literacy for Breadwinners) and Project Big Books.
By implementing various strategies, innovations and programs to improve the quality of curriculum and instruction, North City Elementary School managed to address the following problems: struggling readers, malnutrition, parents who can’t get modules, absenteeism, learners whose parents cannot facilitate learning for a variety of reasons, learners with difficulties in subject areas particularly in reading, math and science and ensured that learning continued in the midst of the pandemic.
Mayor Remollo believes that the achievement of North City Elementary School is a testament to the industry, dedication and excellence of the faculty and staff not only of the school but also of the entire Deped Division of Dumaguete City.
