Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo commended the personnel of the City Health Office led by Dr. Maria Sarah B. Talla for being awarded Top 5 in the Philippines by the Department of Health for its outstanding Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs that aim to prevent and control the transmission of STI HIV/AIDS in the community.
The City Government has implemented City Ordinance No. 37 in 2008 with annual appropriation to various HIV-related activities and to purchase curative and preventive commodities.
Since 2009 up to the present the Multi-sectoral STI HIV/AIDS council has been actively involved in the promotion of prevention and control activities through information dissemination and special events; conduct of voluntary counseling and testing among key affected, vulnerable and general population, and, facilitate capability building of advocates, Person living with PHIV (PLHIV) and stakeholders from other government agencies, private sector and non-government organizations.
Despite these interventions, STI/HIV/AIDS continues to increase in number, especially among young adults.
The increase could probably be attributed to stigma reduction, accessibility and availability of testing facilities within the City Health Office Social Hygiene Clinic and presence of a treatment hub.
