More than a hundred barangay officials of Dumaguete City were subjected to random drug testing by the Liga ng mga Barangay led its President Dionie Amores in accordance to the ordinance that he authored, with the support of Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo, back in 2019.
Among those who were tested were Punong Barangays, Kagawads, Barangay Secretaries, Barangay Treasurers and SK Chairpersons. Councilor Amores said that any official who will refuse to undergo the test could face sanctions.
This is in line with the advocacy of Councilor Amores as provided for in the city ordinance Institutionalizing Drug Free Workplace Through Mandatory Random Test so that barangay officials could set good examples to their constituents by submitting to the annual examination.
Aside from the Liga ng mga Barangay, the Dumaguete PNP led by Chief-of-Police Lt. Col. Ramoncelio Sawan, the Department of Interior and Local Government, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the City Health Office supervised the drug testing administered by a reputable private laboratory.
Meanwhile, employees and officials of the City Government are also subject to surprise and random drug tests.
Those who tested positive were removed from their positions and required to complete an drugs rehabilitation program for several months with the possibility of being rehired once all conditions are met.
