Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo speaks on how the city government managed to successfully organize the hosting of various local, national and international sports events that boosted the local economy and its profile as a sports tourism destination of choice in the Visayas.

Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental have been chosen to host the 2020 ASEAN Schools Games that will feature the best student athletes of the 11-member nations of Southeast Asia Region that will surely generate income for the hosts like any sports events.

Tourist arrivals in Dumaguete City has steadily increased since it started promoting sports tourism. In 2016, 529, 414 tourists visited the city, rose to 651, 115 in 2017 up to 704, 689 in 2018.

Among the resource persons with Mayor Remollo are Charles Lim, Founder of Sports Tourism Forum and Awards; Princess Galura of Sunrise Events-Ironman; sports organizers Roger Banzuela and Yun Hak-Chun.

Meanwhile, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose V. Lacson discusses with Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo the strengths and possible areas of cooperation to promote sports tourism that will benefit the cities and towns of Negros Island.

Mayor Remollo was invited to speak before a conference organized by the provincial government of Negros Occidental and the Philippine Sports Tourism Forum on the best means on how to organize sports tourism events. In 2017 and 2018, Dumaguete City was cited as the Philippines Best Sports Tourism Organizer and Runner-up as the Sports Tourism Destination of the country in 2017.

Wednesday’s forum was attended by sports coordinators and tourism officers of Negros Occidental in the Provincial Capitol Social Hall, Bacolod City.
