The City Government of Dumaguete in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Silliman University High School Class of 1979 and other organizations formally inaugurated the Persons with Disability Center presided by Father Christian Benjamin, Thursday afternoon.

Local Government officials led by Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo, Vice-Mayor Alan Gel Cordova, Councilors Karissa Faye Tolentino-Maxino, Michael Bandal, Edgar Lentorio, Agustin Miguel Perdices, Bernice Anne A. Elmaco, Liga ng mga Barangay President Dione Amores and SK Federation President Lei Marie Danielle Tolentino joined the ceremony to underscore their support to the rights of PWDs.

Mayor Remollo administered the oath office to the newly elected officers of the federation. He reiterated his administration’s support to people with special needs by ensuring the implementation of the Magna Carta for PWDs and the allocation of funds for additional benefits and medical assistance.

The federation’s adviser and motivational speaker Zacharias Mansing, who is bound in a wheelchair following an accident many years ago, urged his fellow PWDs not to let their disability to define them and to always think on how to contribute for the betterment of their organization.

The representative of SUHS Class of ’79 exhorted the PWDs “to choose to be happy, choose to feel life, to always pray to God and reaffirmed the group’s commitment to be with them in their journey through life.”
