In recognition of the city as home to a significant number of overseas Filipinos, the Commission on Filipino Overseas inks a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Dumaguete for the establishment of a website that will link and harness investments, donations and other initiatives from OFWs for the benefit of the city.
Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo signed the MOU with CFO Chairperson Francisco Acosta for the project called BalinkBayan: Overseas Filipinos One-Stop Online Portal for Diaspora Engagement. Assistant City Administrator Dr. Dinno Depositario accepted one (1) unit computer set donated by the CFO to be used in the project.
The city will operate and maintain a website that will streamline a system of engagement with overseas Filipinos to inspire them to invest, travel, retire, donate, conduct medical mission or outreach, volunteer and engage in educational work in Dumaguete City.
Philanthropic and enterprising Overseas Filipinos can use the Balinkbayan webpage of the city so they could choose which foundations or charity to send their assistance, decide the suitable business to invest, offer overseas job opportunities to local workers, look for best properties to buy or even serve as guide in their travels to the city and Negros Oriental.
CFO notes that in 2017 alone OFWs have remitted about $32 billion to the Philippine economy. Thus, helping channel the resources of successful Filipinos gainfully employed overseas while maintaining strong political, economic and cultural ties with their home country will surely boost Dumaguete’s tourism, trade and commerce and philanthropic reach, technology and science transfer to the greater benefit of the city.
