Mayor Felipe Antonio “Ipe” Remollo has accepted the request of Department of Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones for the City Government to host the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet on February 2019.
Secretary Briones offered Dumaguete City the honor to host the regional meet when she met Mayor Remollo during the recent Buglasan Festival.
Mayor Remollo made the formal announcement before a crowd of 2,566 delegates during the Opening Ceremonies of the 2018 DepEd Dumaguete Palarong Panlungsod held today at the Perdices Coliseum with Councilor Manuel Sagarbarria.
“[The Department of Education] DepEd recognizes the capability of DepEd Dumaguete and the City Government in hosting the Palaro,” reveals Mayor Remollo.
He added that Dumaguete is a favorite host during sports meet.
The chief executive also stressed that activities like the city athletic meet is in line with the vision of DepEd and the City Government in promoting “our City including the province as a sports hub.”
The mayor also reveals the upcoming international triathlon to be held in the city which will usher close to 500 participants from all over the world.
He added that the games of the Philippine Volleyball League and the Beach Volleyball Republic will be held in Dumaguete before the year ends.
A kick-off parade was done prior to the short opening rites where the delegates paraded on their sports attire from the Freedom Park up to the Perdices Coliseum.
City Schools Division Superintendent Evangel Luminarias officially declares the opening of the annual city sports tilt which signals the start of the 4-day city Palaro.
Also present during the activity are City Councilor Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria, Olympian Jennifer Chan, school principals, various heads of private institutions, and division personnel.
About 30 public and private elementary and secondary schools will compete in 27 individual and team events. Winners of the City Palaro will represent DepEd Dumaguete to the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Meet (CVIRAA). In the 2018 edition of CVIRAA Meet, Team Dumaguete bagged the 4th Place honors among 19 schools division. (CASJ)
