Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo welcomes the support of the majority of the barangay officials of Barangay Camanjac and the Sangguniang Barangay of Candau-ay led by Punong Barangay Gregorio Oira to the Safe Closure and Rehabilitation Plan of the open dumpsite.

Nevertheless, Mayor Remollo is still open to a dialogue with the residents of Barangay Camanjac to address their concerns in a public hearing.

In a barangay resolution passed on June 27, 2018, Camanjac noted that on June 11, 2018 the City Government of Dumaguete received a letter from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources EMB Region 7 dated May 22, 2018 and signed by Regional Director Engr. William P. Cunado, approving the comprehensive Safe Closure and Rehabilitation Plan (SCRP) of the Candau-ay dumpsite.”

It added that “part of the SCRP is the physical closure of the existing dumpsite, transition site for new solid wastes and construction and operation of the sanitary landfill.”

Furthermore, the same resolution stated that the city has purchased approximately three-hectare lot previously owned by Franklin Divinigracia situated in Barangay Candau-ay has been identified in the SCRP as a potential site for sanitary landfill, which was endorsed by 29 out of the 30 Punong Barangays of the city.”

Finally, the Barangay Kagawads stressed that “Mayor Remollo deserves the support of all local officials and residents of the city for his tireless and consistent efforts to address the thirty (30) year old problem on how to responsibly manage and dispose the city’s solid waste.”

The resolution was signed by Punong Barangay Bartolome A. Aranas, Kagawads, Benjie I. Olam, Jessie M. Estrabela, Elgin C. Villamil, Cayo M. Calbog and Cheryl C. Zerna. Kagawad Raul A. Dicen abstained while Kagawad Cirilo I. Dales was absent.

For the first time, the city has acquired a lot in Candau-ay where the Materials Recovery Facility and Sanitary Landfill will be established. A group of engineers are also focused not only in the closure and rehabilitation but also in the eventual commission and operation of a sanitary landfill.

Amid objections by some residents in the adjoining barangays and minority councilors, the administration assures them that all mitigating measures and engineering interventions will be in place to ensure the safety of the lives and properties near the facilities.
