His Excellency Igor Khovaev of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Philippines pays a courtesy call to Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo and other local officials as part of his official visit to the city.
Mayor Remollo stressed the need for the Philippines particularly Dumaguete City to develop closer ties with Russia to combat terrorism and promote tourism.
He labeled Russia a unique country that is Eurasian in character. It is multi-ethnic and multi-religious like the Philippines with Muslims and Christians living side by side in harmony for centuries.
Ambassador Khovaev reiterated the importance of sports and culture to unite peoples and nations toward peace.
Both nations are fighting the global war on terrorism, which has “no religion and nationality,” the Russian envoy stressed.
Russia has supplied the Philippines with armaments for free to strengthen national defense and against insurgency.
Councilors Lilani Ramon, Joe Kenneth Arbas, Karissa Tolentino, Manuel Arbon, Alan Gel Cordov and City Administrator Ricardo Gonzales Jr. joined the official ceremony to welcome the envoy.
Ambassador Khovaev was accompanied by the embassy’s 3rd Secretary Dennis Karenin.
Both Mayor Remollo and Khovaev vowed to explore more areas of cooperation in the months to come.
The embassy will soon hold a symposium billed as “Meet Russia” to promote awareness and friendship between the two nations, particularly Dumaguete City.
