Dumaguete City: Red Orchid Hall of Fame Awardee
The City of Gentle People makes its three years in a row and earned the distinction as a Red Orchid Hall of Fame Award from the Department of Health for its relentless campaign in prohibiting and penalizing cigarette smoking in public places.
Mayor Felipe Antonio B. Remollo said that the recognition illustrates the administration’s uncompromising stand against smoking in public, which applies without exemption even among transients and visitors to the city.
City Health Officer Dr. Maria Sarah Talla, Emily Abordo and Joey Abella of the City Legal Office present to Mayor Felipe Antonio B. Remollo the award and symbolic check of P 500, 000 as cash incentive to the city.
City Health Officer Dr. Maria Sarah Talla urged the public to help in the enforcement of the smoke-free ordinance.
Per records of the City Health Office nearly 800 violators of the ordinance have been apprehended and penalized by paying a fine of P 500.00 or to perform community service.
From January to November of the current year 2017, only 161 violators have been penalized. Most of the violators not from Dumaguete City.
Emily Abordo said that those who will fail to pay the fine will not be issued a police clearance and mayor’s permit unless they settle their penalty.
