DUMAGUETE CITY,Feb.4 (PIO) –The city government of Dumaguete through the City Social Welfare Office distributed white gifts from February 3 to 5,2013, to the more than 5,000 indigents coming from the 30 barangays of Dumaguete.
City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria explained the distribution of the white gifts which was intended for Christmas was delayed due unforeseen events in December and prior months where the city and the province was also hit by typhoons.
The mayor said he wanted to make sure not a single life is lost as a result of those calamities.
Recipients consider the white gifts as Christmas presence in February, in thanking the Sangguniang Panlungsod headed by Vice Mayor Woodrow Maquiling for allocating the funds and Mayor Sagarbarria for making true his promise of giving them the white gifts even if delayed.
The white gifts were delivered to the recipient barangays through their respective barangay officials, a diversion of what has been undertaken in the past where indigents are asked to come to the public market and form very long lines from morning till noon just to receive three kilos of rice, canned goods, coffee and milk.
Sagarbarria changed the manner of distributing the gifts for the convenience of the indigents and to avoid the hustle as well as spending for few pesos for their ride back and forth.
City social welfare officer Carola Alquero made it clear identification of the indigents were made by the city’s social workers and the tickets were distributed through the respective barangay officials.
Next to receive the white gifts are the more than 3,000 senior citizens all over the city and 200 persons with disabilities.
Barangay Calindagan has the most number of recipients at 390, being the biggest barangay , followed by Taclobo with 298, barangays Piapi and Batinguel at 250 each, 241 for barangay Candau-ay, 215 for Banilad, 208 for Bagacay, 204 from Cadawinonan, 200 each from barangays Balugo, Talay, Junob, Camanjac, Bantayan and Looc, 180 from barangays Tabuc-tubig and Daro, 160 from barangays Poblacion 2 and Bajumpandan, 150 each for barangays Tinago, Mangnao, Poblacion 8, 145 for Cantil-e, 140 for Buñao, 131 for Pulantubig, 120 for Motong, 10 each for Poblacion 4 and Poblacion 3, and 8 recipients from Poblacion 5.(with report by Choy Gallarde of Sky Cable)
